Cosmetology Tech I- Electricity Unit

This week, our Tech I Cosmetology students dove into the electrifying topic of Electricity Principles and Electricity in Cosmetology, following the Pivot Point curriculum. With hands-on learning and lots of "aha!" moments, students brought science to life—literally—by making lights glow, fans spin, and buzzers buzz!

The focus was on understanding open and closed circuits, how electricity flows, and why it’s important to ensure that tools used in the salon are safe and effective. Students built simple circuits to see firsthand how energy moves through a complete path (closed circuit) and stops when interrupted (open circuit).

We also explored insulators vs. conductors—critical knowledge for anyone working with tools like flat irons, blow dryers, and clippers. Students learned to identify materials that allow electricity to flow freely (like metal) versus those that block the current (like rubber or plastic), and how these materials keep both the stylist and client safe.

Through real-world applications, they’re starting to connect the science of electricity with the everyday tools and services they’ll be using in their careers. Whether it’s understanding the voltage of a hairdryer or the grounding of an electric file, this foundation sets the tone for a safe and knowledgeable cosmetologist.

Way to go, Tech I! Keep lighting up the classroom with your curiosity and spark!
