Wreaths Across America- WRVC Volunteers

Westbrook Regional Vocational Center is proud to celebrate 18 outstanding student volunteers from our Criminal Justice, Firefighting, and EMT programs who took part in the Wreaths Across America Kickoff Event at UNUM. The dedication, professionalism, and heart of these students perfectly reflect the mission of WAA: Remember, Honor, and Teach.

This unforgettable community event, made possible thanks to the generous outreach of Cary Olsen-Cartwright of UNUM, brought together hundreds of people, including the inspiring WAA founders, the talented Westbrook High School Chorus, and a convoy of more than 160 volunteers and Gold Star families traveling to Arlington National Cemetery together to place wreaths upon the graves of our nation’s heroes.

Our students proudly assisted throughout the ceremony and reception by welcoming guests, supporting event organizers, helping to prepare a wreath alongside the founder of Wreaths Across America, Mr. Morrill Worcester, symbolizing what the wreath represents and the mission of national remembrance, and served the special guests of honor/WAA volunteers dinner.

Firefighting students Mathieu P. & Tianna S. gave heartfelt readings that included a poem describing the deep symbolism of the wreath and its role in honoring our fallen veterans, which was written by Mr. Worcester.

The UNUM WAA kickoff event offered a moving keynote speech from Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.), U.S. Army, Tom DiTomasso, and a welcome message from Morrill Worcester, the WAA founder. The event was graced with beautiful music from the Westbrook High School Chamber Singers/Chorus, and a shared dinner that brought together veterans, Gold Star families, community leaders, students, and families. It was truly an evening that showcased the power of unity and the impact young people can make when given the opportunity to serve.

The HUGEST "THANK YOU" goes out to our student volunteers; the compliments we received were countless! To say that we are proud of these students is an understatement. These opportunities would not be possible without the outstanding leadership of Lt. (Ret.) John Brooks and Officer Kopp who inspire professionalism, service, and compassion within their programs every day. A sincere thank-you to these quiet leaders.

WRVC is honored to be part of this meaningful tradition, and we look forward to continuing to support Wreaths Across America and all who work to honor our nation’s veterans.

Thank you to our students, staff, partners, and community for helping keep the spirit of service alive.
